What is a T1 document?

Direct answer

A T1 document is the customs transit layer that allows non-EU goods to move through the EU without immediate import charges.

For a UK to Germany move, the T1 is what allows the shipment to travel to the correct customs destination before final German clearance.

It does not replace final customs clearance. It postpones it to the proper office of destination.

Where the T1 fits in the customs chain

System connection

CDS → LRN/MRN → T1 → Form 0350 → clearance

The T1 is the transit layer between export setup and final German clearance.

It keeps the shipment under customs control while it moves across borders.

How the T1 works in practice

Core process
01

Transit is opened

The T1 is created before the shipment enters the EU.
02

Goods move under customs control

The shipment travels through the EU without immediate import duties being paid.
03

Shipment reaches destination customs office

The goods arrive inland in Germany for the next customs stage.
04

Transit is discharged

The T1 is closed and the shipment proceeds into final German customs handling.

The T1 is not generic transport paperwork. It is the customs mechanism that keeps the movement legally controlled during transit.

What can go wrong with a T1

Common issues
  • Weak or inaccurate goods description
  • Wrong destination office or incorrect movement data
  • Failure to discharge the T1 correctly
  • Assuming T1 is the same as final customs clearance

T1 questions

Does the T1 replace German customs clearance?

No. It only covers transit. Final clearance still happens at destination.

Who usually prepares the T1?

Usually your mover, customs broker or freight forwarder.

Why is the T1 important?

Because it lets the shipment continue under customs control instead of being fully imported at the first border.

What happens if the T1 is not discharged?

The movement can remain open and create delays or customs liability issues.

Make sure your transit is set up before border crossing

T1 controls movement between export and import. Without it, your shipment cannot legally move.
